SVNSW SmlState Volleyball is thrilled to announce appointment of our new General Manager, Baz Wedmaier.

Baz will be joining us officially on 1 April 2019, when he wraps up his responsibilities in his current role as Event Manager – Beach Volleyball with Volleyball Australia (VA)

ABOUT BAZ

Baz brings a wealth of experience in both volleyball and general leadership roles. His incredible amount of experience across Indoor and Beach Volleyball spans 20+ years and extends from the grass roots level through to the Olympic Games touching every operational area. His hands-on, dedicated, positive, open, friendly and professional approach will be a wonderful asset to our State in the years to come.

During his time at VA Baz has worked closely with many of our NSW volleyball community, as part of leading International and National beach and indoor volleyball events held across Australia. Baz also led the complete review and redevelopment of the strategic direction of Beach Volleyball events in Australia, from participation to high performance including eventing, rules and regulations governing the sport and unifying a national approach.

Baz has recently been appointed to the FIVB as a Beach Volleyball Technical Delegate. The invitation-only role is currently held by only 22 people worldwide.

During his career, Baz has had a range of other roles, including working as an Estimator and Building Designer, a stint as Operations Manager at Volleyball South Australia, and over 12 years as Managing Director at Dedicated Events Management Business supporting Motorsports, Snow Boarding and Volleyball events across Australia, South Pacific and Europe. Baz has also spent several years serving on Boards for Cairns Volleyball Association, Queensland Volleyball and the Volleyball Australia Beach Volleyball Commission.  

When Baz isn’t following his passion for Volleyball or photography, you’ll find him rock climbing, enjoying great music and cooking up a storm for family and friends.  

Baz will be relocating to Sydney in the coming months with his family, Trudi and little one Kenzi.

TEAM UPDATES AND TIMINGS

2019 is an exciting year for the team at State Volleyball NSW.

We’ve set up a new, larger team to better support and grow Volleyball across the State and take our organisation to the next level of maturity. We’re also in the process of refreshing our constitution (stay tuned) and have a refreshed strategy to take our organisation to the next level of maturity and impact the sport we love in NSW.

We’ve also finalised a new structure for our State Volleyball NSW team, boosting resourcing and widening our areas of expertise to deliver an even greater impact.

Congratulations to our team for 2019

Over the coming months, our new General Manager will start to familiarise himself with our community and wonderful team in the State Volleyball NSW offices in the lead up to his official start in April. SVNSW has arranged for strong leadership support during these months to ensure a seamless kick-start in 2019 and smooth transition in April.

About:

When Briianka isn’t involved in Volleyball she loves working out, but HATES running. Put a barbell in front of her any day and she may just show you how strong she really is.

She is also married to a volleyballer and has two wonderful children who really know how to keep her on her toes. Will they be volleyballers too???

About:

Constantina has a Greek-Canadian background and has been in Australia since 2011. She became a proud Australian in 2016. Constantina has dual undergraduate degrees in science and physical and health education, as well as a Master of Teaching degree. She worked in education prior to joining SVNSW in 2015. Constantina hails from the Pegasus Volleyball Club in Kingston, Ontario and is a current member of Sydney University Volleyball Club.

Constantina has a two-year old son named James, lives in Cronulla, loves Celine Dion and the volleyball community in NSW.

  • Development of Beach Volleyball coaches
  • Coordination and development of Beach Volleyball programs and events
  • Development program for talented players

About:

Mladen joins State Volleyball NSW from Serbia, where he worked to develop Beach Volleyball. He was an organiser of National and International Volleyball and Beach Volleyball programs and events in Europe, as well as working as a researcher in development of Volleyball at a nearby University.

Mladen also coached professional and upcoming junior players across both indoor and beach formats.

His mantra to live by is “Everything is possible.”

  • Delivery and organisation of development programs (Spikeroos/JDP/Beach Squad) across the NSW including regional areas.
  • Format, future planning, strength and conditioning liaison for major programs (AJVC/AJBVC/EDP).
  • Pathway integration and coach liaison.

About:

A qualified volleyball coach in Japan and Australia and an official referee in Australia, Yoshi coaches volleyball for schools across Sydney, as well as with the UTS Volleyball Club.   She plays for UTSSU in the Australian Volleyball League (AVL) and UTS in the Sydney Volleyball League (SVL).

Prior to joining SVNSW, Yoshi played volleyball in the premier and second division of the Japanese National League as a professional volleyball player and worked in the fitness industry as a qualified instructor and personal trainer in Japan and Australia.

Key area of focus:

  • Communication - between our State Volleyball office, State team athletes and parents
  • Safety – vigilantly maintaining a safe environment for all players, with a focus on child safety.
  • Support – supporting the team to deliver and grow Volleyball in NSW.

About:

Kateia has experience in the coaching world as well as being the athlete; and understands the struggle of travel for those based in rural or regional areas.

An experienced Nanny, Kateia’s passionate about child safety, loves having fun, learning and experiencing new things. She thrives on being part of a community and working hard to contribute to the achievement of shared team goals, whether it be winning AJVC/AJBVC or getting a new coach ready to hit the ground running.

Before Kateia discovered the world of Volleyball, she studied Judo for 6 years and Ballet for over than 10 years.

 

State Volleyball NSW Board of Directors

About:

In rare times when Deb is not at volleyball, she works as a Senior Paraplanner for an AMP Financial Planning firm.

Deb has also been a passionate volunteer coach, player and Treasurer for the UTS Volleyball Club for over 20 years.

Deb is almost always at volleyball. Luckily, the rest of the family is also there. Deb’s husband Mark is also a volleyball coach and her son, Wolfie (aged 13) has been playing for NSW for the past 3 years. Deb’s daughter Bella (aged 8) has not yet started playing beyond the lounge room but already loves the social aspect of volleyball and is planning a career in volleyball coaching! 

 

 

Keith Suckling – Vice President and Board Director since June 2012

About:

When Keith isn't playing coaching or refereeing volleyball, he works in a Market Insights and Analysis role for for Cochlear, as well as his consulting business.

Keith continues to try to keep retirement at bay, holding onto his playing career with UTS Volleyball Club. He has also played in the National League for a large number of years.

Keith's partner Jo is also heavily involved with UTS volleyball club. He is yet to get his daughter Emma to take up volleyball, but continues to try.

About:

Stuart has been playing volleyball for 11 years, since moving to Australia from his native United Kingdom.

An avid member of the sport, Stuart has participated in local, state, interstate and even international competitions. He’s a passionate Referee, sitting his state level indoor as well as participating in the National Level outdoor course.

Stuart sits as the Vice President of the Freezone Volleyball Club as well as being President of Team Sydney, the NSW Association for all sporting clubs that play under the LGBTIQ banner, roughly 40 sporting clubs and 4000+ athletes.

Stuart brings over 20 years’ experience and dedication to his role as head coach in both our U15 and U17’s women’s youth championship programs.

If you can’t find Stuart on the volleyball court, then try the nearest pool with his kids or on the water sailing the harbour. He hates sitting still and his ideal holiday is skiing down a new slope in some remote mountain or jet skiing in the sun.

 

Victor Jiang - Treasurer and Board Director since May 2013

About:

Victor has been a long-time volleyball fan since he was a child, but he only learned to play in his 20s.

Victor is a CPA working for in the Not for Profit sector that helps people with Disabilities.

Like many Volleyball players in our community, Victor met his partner because of Volleyball. He counts himself lucky and loves our sport even more now it’s a family affair.

 

 

 

Brooke Hamilton (Mitchell) – Board Director since 2016  

Brooke

Key area of focus:

  • Schools involvement
  • Junior development pathways.

About:

Brooke is an English teacher at Pittwater High School where she also coaches the school volleyball squad.

As a teenager Brooke played volleyball through school and state pathways and enjoyed playing SVL with Hills Dragons. Now as a teacher she enjoys helping her students take hold of similar opportunities.

Brooke loves coaching her school squad and has enjoyed coaching junior NSW teams. She also loves to play socially at state cups with The Jaguars. 

 

 

Monica Jones-McFee– Board Director since June 2018

About:

Monica has over 15 years of volleyball experience as an athlete, coach and working in Development roles with Volleyball New Brunswick (Canada) and State Volleyball NSW.

As an athlete, Monica competed in Canada, including the Canada Summer Games and was on scholarship at the University of New Brunswick as team captain. Monica also played in the Super 8’s league in the UK post university. In Australia she competed in the AVL, including one year as captain.

Monica has coached multiple provincial teams in Canada and was the assistant coach for the women’s program at the University of a New Brunswick. She has also coached State teams for NSW for beach and indoor.

Professionally Monica is a teacher and has a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education, with the hopes of pursuing a master’s in physical literacy.

Monica’s love of the sport and the incredible potential of NSW juniors is what motivates me her continued involvement with volleyball in NSW. Monica encourages any juniors with questions or in need of guidance to please reach out – she’d love to help.

  

 

Ian Garrett – Board Director since June 2018

About:

Ian has been involved in Sport at an Elite level both as an athlete and a coach for around 30 years. He competed at both Commonwealth and World Championships in the High Jump in the early 1990s.

Professionally Ian was working in the IT industry up until 2012 when he and his wife opened an Early Education Centre and is now mixing the running of our business with his many Volleyball coaching roles.

"How much is too much Volleyball?" Ian should make time for a holiday this year that doesn't involve Volleyball. Although, as his son will probably be playing Volleyball somewhere other than Australia in the second half of the year, this may just be a pipe dream!!

 

 

Roger Jones – Board Director since June 2018

About:

As Roger’s playing days reduce, his volleyball passion continues; helping grow and develop the next generation of volleyball players and supporting the community through his contributions as NBVA board member (Coaching & development) and SVNSW.

Besides work and volleyball commitments, Roger’s treasures time spent with his amazing little girl who constantly keeps him on his toes.

 

Lucy Coggan – Board Director since September 2016

  • Communication
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Strategic planning, brand, marketing and sponsorship.

About:

Lucy has broad experience across professional marketing and communications leadership roles across agency and in-house environments in private and not-for-profit sectors.

Lucy’s love of volleyball started in High School, when she finally attended a training session following a year of daily persistence from one of her teachers; “You’re tall. You should play volleyball.”

Since then, the sport has given her so much pure joy and friendship. Lucy’s driven to ‘give back’ to the sport that has given her so much, and to help others discover the very special magic of Volleyball.

Lucy is a proud member of the Sydney North Volleyball Club, serving on the club as a Board Director since November 2013.

Lucy has two awesome kids who are passionate balloon volleyballers!  When she’s not on court, you can find her in the Hunter Valley helping to make (and sample) wine at her family vineyard.
